Richard,
This is a tough subject to comment on because everyone has their own idea of
what should be in a report and there are very few resources on rips and
color proofing.
Over the years I have done several reports like this, so I can speak from
experience. Let me first say that any type of technology report is like
fruit, so they can go bad after a little time passes.
So, one should look at the dates of these or any other technology reports
and see if they are over 12 months old. If they are, then one should be
suspect of the quality of the data.
What I observed after I bought and read these reports are that to me these
reports are a mixed bag. That is they cover some fundamentals about color
proofing and provide vendors names (and some product names) who are involved
with color proofing. So on one hand, portions of these reports are
conceptually accurate.
But...when it comes to products covered it seems that they only comment on
products in any depth that were sent to them and that they then tested.
The FLAAR group only accepts the final products to test, so they don9t test
products that will time out after say 90 days.
They also mention products they might have picked up literature for at a
trade show, but details are sketchy.
While I have not reviewed the FLAAR website and reports in the last few
months, the reports I bought did not not offer any insight into some of the
latest rip products.
For example, if you want to know about the differences between say a Mac
OSX rip from Colorburst or even ProofMaster Addesso, you would be wasting
you money since these rips were too new to have been reported on over a
year ago and are only now just coming into their own.
Probably the best thing I got from the reports was a list of rip vendors.
Which made it easier for me to begin to track rip vendors and color
proofing solutions.
My .02.
Jim Rich
