I'm wondering your thoughts on the apple 17" LCD Vs the 20".
Size aside is the image quality and profile ability difference consistent with the price difference ?

Unequivocally, yes; I have both - the 17" is over two years old & used at home, the 20" is 4 months old & used at work. The 20" convinced me to make the move from CRT to LCD monitors in the graphics department I support.

Granted, our office environment isn't conducive to on-screen emulation of printed pieces (red walls, south-facing windows, 34000K fluorescent indirect lighting) but, given the brightness possible with an LCD "calibrated" to 65000 & 2.2 gamma, they're much better than the CRT's we've been using.

For professional use the 17" is a bit smallish and I was never happy with the evenness; the 20" appears far better.
