As a decision-maker and engineer on ColorSync in general and ColorSync
Utility in particular, I'd like to make a few personal comments to
everyone reading this thread:
- I take considerable pride in my work on ColorSync - especially
ColorSync Utility and the Display Calibrator since these are the
"public face" of ColorSync.
- I have always endeavored to improve the functionality and user
experience of ColorSync with every release.
- I periodically read this list and daily review any bugs assigned to
me. Please feel free to reports bugs or constructive criticism to this
list or bugreporter. I am especially responsive to reasoned and polite
reports.
- I acknowledge that designing a simple user interface for complex
technology is about compromise between many conflicting functional and
aesthetic goals. Sometimes there is no perfect solution, often there
is more than one good solution, and always opinions will differ on
which is which.
That said, here are some of the changes that I'll will consider given
the comments of this tread so far.
- I will fix any crashes that are reported.
- I will change the name of the "New" menu item to something like "New
Utility Browser" so that the function is more clear. I will continue to
allow the ability to have more than one Utility Browser because it
allows (for users that choose to use it) the ability to compare
profiles, devices, and filters. Even though comparison is not useful
for Preferences or FirstAid, I will not make exception since doing so
will likely require splitting the singe utility window into separate
multiple windows.
- Currently the information displayed in the Profile Utility "looks
different" than the information displayed if the profile is opened as a
file. This is because the former displays "general" information of the
profile (name, location, some header values and a 3D plot distilled
from several tags of the profile) where the latter is a a more
"focused" profile inspector (showing in detail only tag of the profile
at a time). To bridge these two views, I will consider adding a
"general overview" view to the window when the profile is opened as a
file.
- The Filters user interface will likely be overhauled more
substantially once we have a better understanding how this new and
powerful functionality is used in the field.
Other changes being considered include:
- User interface to facilitate installing profiles
- Distinction between warnings and errors in First Aid
- Automatic verification/repair of profiles when opened.
