Roger
We had trouble at first with our little Epson2100, ultrachrome photo & matte
inks, connected to a BEST RIP, using best paper (9180/9150). Some of our
clients had similar problems with the same paper using 7600/9600(similar
inks). What we found was the paper, the BEST dealer recommended wasn't
giving us the response/gamut we expected so they introduced us to a new
stock, in Australia the BEST dealer (DES) call it ComputaProof Satin 250.
This immediately gave us a better result. Considering we only use it for
proofing magazines we didn't want it any more glossy, maybe you do.
I also have had better results when creating profiles using PrintOpen
instead of ProfileMaker. The black detail seems deeper and neutrals are far
better - no major tinges. Some thing to do with creating a better kTRC curve
I think. Keeping in mind we are creating CMYK output profiles for use in our
colour management software, not RGB. This may be a little different for you
because of that but it sounds like the same problems we had. The BEST
dealers have since been creating profiles using the latest version of their
premium suite RIP software (a cool feature) and said they are very similar
to the PrintOpen profiles created on the same stocks.
Also this new stock was nearly half the price of some of the earlier ones.
Cheers
Wayne
