What is the priority of usage by the ColorSync engine when several variants of a single named profile exist both in /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and /Library/ColorSync/Profiles (and perhaps also in ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles)?
I'll use Generic RGB.icc as an example (since it impacts many ColorSync operations under the hood). System installations install a version dated 7/22/2002 into /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles, and certain applications (such as Quark 6 or Photoshop) install one (sometimes older, and sometimes with differing values) into /Library/ColorSync/Profiles. Also a user copying or moving profiles from an OS 9 installation may provide yet another version. At any rate I can often find two or three non-identical versions loaded onto one computer, usually with an older version located in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles (sometimes 2, since one may be named Generic RGB.icc and the other Generic RGB).
I think that the expected priority would be that the global copy would override the system copy, and that a user copy would override both. But here since the system copy is usually the newest, and the one that ColorSync has hardwired connections to, a recipe for confusion is served up.
What can be expected from the interactions of these multiple files? Yes, we can remove duplicates or assure that they are identical, but rest assured that that is not the case on many a computer.
Since earlier threads have brought to light the surprising ways in which the Generic RGB profile becomes involved in the transforms of even a fully color-managed workflow, how can we best defend ourselves as we navigate through this minefield (which has some parallels with the insidious installations of the Times font -- which I know can wreak havoc).
