As of 2/01, PIMA is no more - they merged with DIG and became known as I3A.
I came across this last week when looking for resolution targets. The
Pima.net web site no longer exists, and there's not even a forwarding link. Other
refs point (appropriately) to www.i3a.org as the current web site.
Interestingly, a list of "strategic partners" is missing Epson - but includes HP, Kodak,
Agfa, Fuji, and Konica. The "extended sRGB color space" is now an "approved
I3A Standard."

There is a $35 charge for non- .gov or .edu users to obtain the (current)
spec., although I doubt that it's changed from what Andrew dug up. I suspect
that Andy is on the right track:
"Is this possibly just another way to use the data in the sYCC JPGs that
digital cameras create? Currently, that sYCC data is simply
transformed/clipped into sRGB when the file is opened..."
The e-sRGB standard also clips when transforming to sRGB.
"sRGB. In cases where the e-sRGB gamut used extends beyond the sRGB
YCC gamut, some gamut mapping will be required prior to transforming the
e-sRGB image data to sRGB YCC. The
conversion from e-sRGB to sRGB YCC specified here utilizes clipping, however
it is anticipated that more advanced
gamut mapping algorithms may be employed."
Other than as an academic exercise, is e-sRGB in use anywhere? From what I've
read, it would seem to serve the same general purpose as the Epson Print
Image Matching PS plugin, namely, avoiding clipping into the sRGB gamut.
Microsoft weems to have found the standard useful in a patent application:
