I am hoping someone can confirm that this is possible and not just my
imagination.
Two thing:
1) The lighting will affect the color rendition, perhaps exaggerating or
suppressing visual differences (consider an extreme example, viewing under
a monochromatic light would suppress any differences at wavelengths that
weren't being illuminated), so to get an accurate idea of the magnitude
of differences, the two prints should be viewed under their intended
illumination.
2) There can be "metameric" differences due to different black generation
(ie. different reflectance spectrum that are intended to look the same
under a particular illuminant, may not look the same under a different
illuminant, due to a different mix of black and CMY).
