First it needs to be said that there is a tremendous amount of development
time that goes into each printer supported by ImagePrint, it isn't just the
same front end, color, and screening for every printer. As a previous Epson
ProGraphics dealer I know Roland is virtually finished in the photographic
market, Epson is clearly selling in vast quantities, nobody can keep up. You
can buy 3 9600's for the price the cheapest Roland. Now, there is no doubt
Roland is much nicer in terms of build quality and will likely run longer
than the Epson due to the mechanical quality, but 99% of labs and
photographers know that the technology will be outdated by the time the
machine dies and they will be forced to upgrade in 2 years time anyway.
Roland, Encad, Colorspan, these printers are really well suited to the
markets that Epson is weak in. Roland's advertising is almost all about
print and cut machines and Solvents, different vertical market. Roland also
has their own RIP option now ( I think it is Wasatch) besides Colorchoice.
As soon as Epson releases their larger printer it will dig into Roland,
further weakening demand for their product in the photographic market. Why
should Colorbyte jump in now knowing what lies ahead?
