I photograph professionally in advertising with a PhaseOne 25H and a
Fuji S2.
I use CaptureOne Pro and PhotoshopCS and see no need to do any
profiles, but I'm always willing to learn.
From all that I've read and studied on the subject, I dont believe you
can profile a digital camera.
I would go so far as to say it can only work for repro work - the
camera as a device to copy something as accurately as possible.
Scanners can be profiled. For it to have any chance of working with a
camera, you would have to you use the repro set-up you describe for
every photograph from then on and any other lighting set-up would have
to be profiled separately. It may work if you are photographing
something in a very technical manner and the lighting is the same every
time. Natural light is not feasible, it seems to me, maybe sunlight at
say 30% humidity, same time of day, once a year .....
My experience is that the C1Pro profiles for both the H25 and the S2 is
a good starting point and with interactive tweaks I get great result
using strobes, quartz and natural light of all colors. I prefer
PhotoshopCS for the S2 conversions, but will use any or all of three
converters for the right "look". For all it's technical aspect,
photography always came down to the film stock, which is very
interpretive and there is no absolute color rendition. Same with
digital capture and the RAW converters.
Photography by it's very nature captures only a small portion of colors
and tonalities in the real world, even in the studio with controlled
lighting - it has to be a selection, an interpretation. I think color
management comes into play once the image has been captured, in order
to have it not go through any more interpretations.....
I love to hear opinions on this...

I am using Gretag Macbeth's ProfileMaker 5 application to create
profiles for our Canon 10D camera, and I have a couple of issues that
hopefully someone on the list may be able to help.
I would like to shoot the "Digital ColorChecker SG" target in RAW
mode, but I don't know of any RAW converter software that does not
apply a profile such as Adobe RGB (1998) or sRGB etc. I am making the
assumption that any profile conversion will affect the "Colour
Numbers" and hence make the resulting profile less effective. For the
record, I normally use Capture 1 pro for RAW conversion.
The other related problem I have is what method does the group use to
photograph the SG target. Gretag Macbeth recommend a good Repro
Lighting setup, with lights at 45 degrees etc. Getting an even light
balance seems very critical.
Any ideas on the above would be most welcome.
