White point settings & reading patches

  • Subject: White point settings & reading patches

Hi all,

I'm still a bit hazy in my understanding of practical consequences of the
white point issue. For instance, when reading patches to build a profile,
we can set D50 or D65 for the measurement instrument. I know the
recommended setting is D50, but what does the difference really mean?

Does this mean that separations made with the profile give an optimum
match under D50 lighting when D50 is used for the measurements? And vice
versa D65/D65?
Or will something go completely wrong when the un-recommended D65 is used
when measuring the patches?

(Links to websites that explain a bit more about white points are also
appreciated. I understand their meaning, but need a learn a bit more
about their implications in a workflow.)

Thanks, Wim
