Stefan,
How fastidious are you about gray balancing your "out-of-studio"
images. I find that with a carefully created profile from ColorEyes
20/20, and careful gray balance during shooting, one profile provides
outstanding results under a wide variety of lighting conditions,
including various flavors of daylight, fluorescent, sodium vapor,
tungsten and more. One exception to this is the Phase One H20, which
for some reason needs a separate profile for tungsten. IMHO, gray
balance is the key to making a single profile valid across a wide
variety of lighting conditions.
I'm very careful about my grey balancing:-)
Most of the time, it's only a few of the colors that don't correspond
to what I saw originally. I think it has more to do with the metameric
properties of these colors. Pretty difficult for a profile to
compensate for that.
We had a similar experience the other day, when we were scanning some
Xerox prints. We have a good profile for the scanner, created with
ProfileMaker and the target was a Hutchcolor Fuji print. But the scans
turned out magenta. We also scanned a b/w print that also went magenta.
But our color print scans turned out perfect. If its so difficult to
create a scanner profile, when you have a very stable light source,
then its not surprising that it is difficult to create a good camera
profile that fits every situation.
Still, Im getting closer to a good print when I use a good profile, so
I still use a profile for my camera made with ColorEyes. I just think
that a good profile doesnt do miracles, you still have to do some
color corrections.
Best/Stefan
