I think this is a good demonstration of a printing system (which may consist of multiple presses on different continents) that should not be profiled. Setting a certain proofing system or industry standard as the "shop standard" is about the only way to go (and it can work well too).
That doesn't mean that press profiling is a bad idea. Proofs have many uses. One use is when customers want to see what they are going to get. Industry standards-based proofs will sometimes not give them this information as the standards are often not based on multiple paper types. Profiles based on a press with different stocks can be very useful. They do have to be carefully made though.
