Fingerprinting is generally an analysis of the press/print
conditions with usually a recommendation to alter the press's behavior
in some way. Profiling does not result in an alteration of the press's
behavior at all, simply a characterization of it's current print
condition, good or bad.
This is close to my definition.
Fingerprinting/footprinting is a process of examining the mechanical
characteristics of a particular press. It is a way to check the
mechanical condition of the press and determine if corrective measures
need to be taken.
Some the things that are looked at are dot gain, slur, solids (not just
density, but quality of coverage), roller pressures, roller hardness,
comparative dot gain of each unit, and packing. The list goes on.
Some others things that might be looked at are hue error and grayness
of inks and chemical compatibility.
The point is to ensure that the press is in acceptable condition, not
to calibrate or characterize.
Speak up Kodak, you guys do this. Have I said anything incorrect?
Prisco (Printers' Service Company, www.prisco.com) is another vendor
that does this.
