I firmly agree that fingerprinting and profiling are separate procedures.
Anyone can print an ICC chart, measure it and create a profile. Which by
the way is the most common approach I have seen being taken and which I
employ sometimes. This process does not change how the press prints it just
captures it. Which, I guess, some people might then call the resulting
profile a fingerprint. The process of fingerprinting requires that
variables are at minimum double checked if not completely changed to achieve
specific standards or measured data. The profiling of a press can be done
without a consultant on-site whereas fingerprinting generally takes several
days of on-site expertise. Generally, after a press is fingerprinted then
you can run the ICC chart and create a profile.
This topic has been highly debated and I'm sure it will continue to be.
