I personally believe the kinds of things that Terry and Rich have stated
about press fingerprinting. That fingerprinting is more about optimizing the
press before it is calibrated.
The more I have thought about the terms fingerprinting and profiling it
seems that (at least in today's terms and neologies) these two terms
describe can be vague.
What I propose is to use three terms that make the processes clearer.
Fingerprinting, calibration and press-profiling.
Fingerprinting describes the optimization of the press ( and things on
the press like plates, blankets and chemistry's) so it can then be
calibrated.
Calibration describes the process of bringing the plating system and
press in line with some target specifications like SWOP or Gracol.
Press-profiling describes the press by taking a snapshot of the press at
that moment or to characterize it.
One of the reason to consider this is pragmatic. Imagine a consultant
bidding on work or and printer who is trying to figure out where to spend
their dollars to get the best color out of their presses. And then
consider the language like I am suggesting.
Most of the consultants I know only do the calibration and profiling part of
this process. Where if you suggested to a printer that you were going to
fingerprint their press, they might expect all three things done
(fingerprinting, calibration and profiling).
And what a shock to both the consultant and the printer if they did not
communicate well. The consultant bids low and has to bite the bullet or
get a black eye. Or that the printer finds out that they really were not
getting a good deal because the consultant (who bid low on the work) did
really know what he or she was talking about when it came to fingerprinting.
Just a thought.
