Dear Jim,
and to all others guessing what the difference really could be.
When ProofMaster was first introduced in 2001 (version 1.6) it was
using its own internal color engine to create both desktop fingerprints
and press fingerprints. The technology we used was based on a
mathematical offset model in synergy with the good old dye inks from
piezo ink jet printers.
Measuring the 72 patches would "shape" the offset model for the
reference print.
The deskop fingerprint was sequentially built from an ink density chart
over an ink mixing chart into a grey balance chart.
In 2002 when ProofMaster became OS X compatible (version 1.10) we
slowly moved away from our internal color engine and were using desktop
fingerprints based on ICC profiles. The linearisation was still an
internal process combined with an ICC.
Reason for this were the Archival and UV inks introduced by printer
manufacturors and those were difficult to "fingerprint" with our engine
based on offset inks.
In 2004 ProofMaster 2.0 is introduced with a new wizard based
Calibrator that no is longer offering our internal color engine. The
software is still compatible with the old fingerprints but is not
accepting them as a reference target. We now call them printer (media
and inks) and reference profiles.

This is not meant to be a trick question either.
