I have a SpectroCam 75RE here connected to my IBM laptop real RS-232 serial
port and I never had any problem reading in strip mode, whatsoever. So, even
if it appears expensive to buy a PCI card with true serial ports on it for
your Mac, I would serioulsy consider it as a once-and-for-all solution to
your interface problem. Don't they make them any cheaper that $200 a pop?
Have you checked other brands? Ebay? Have you looked at the Stealth Serial
port? It sells for around $50 and it will add a true DIN-8 serial port on
any G4 (don't know about the G5 yet - haven't checked). FWIW, I regularely
interface my SpectroCam (and a DigitalSwatchBook and a DTP92) without a
hitch to the Stealth on my G4, under OSX 10.3, but I have to admit I've
never tried reading in strip mode on it... Oh, the Stealth installs over the
modem port. So if you still need to fax from your G4 then, I guess, the
Stealth is not the solution for you.
