Hi, I am ready to buy a Sony Artisan - like today! ;-0
I've seen a couple out in the field that I thought were questionable,
having some trouble with gray uniformity. The users were aware of the
problem and had struggled over bothering with exchanging them, deciding
to live with the lack of uniformity. The problem was not bad enough to
merit certainty for an exchange, and the users decided on keeping them
as is. I've also seen many that made me drool, which is why I want one!

Dear Gary
We have had one in service for a few weeks so my observations may be
helpful.
The reason for purchasing this screen rather than an Eizo was because
firstly CRT's are proven technology, there would be no alteration of the
rendition of images when viewed from slightly different positions, the
rendition of shadow detail would be better and all the normal contrast
and gun controls would be available. Finally the calibration and
profiling kit would be optimised for these displays promising the best
possible results, such as an end to any banding or colour changes in
gradients.
Well how close does it come? First impression is that its a pretty
flimsy case.....the monitor wobbles badly when nudged...unlike any other
we have had. Nice grey colour and a hood which thankfully stays put
unlike what we find with the LaCie hoods. Calibration is easy once the
latest software is used.....with the supplied PC software the
calibration always failed to complete!
Looking at a 0-255 gradient its very neutral and super smooth for the
greater part of its length. From about 0-60 it is not as good as hoped
for ...Better than our W900 but certainly not as good as the Artisan
which Andrew Rodney has. This is even when profiled and used at its own
specific gamma. BTW when connected to a G4 Mac the 0-60 was worse!
It is interesting that this monitor is very easily effected by its
positioning on the work surface, and it can at times produce really
horrible yellowish and purple discoloration for no apparent reason.
Turning the monitor off for a time gets rid of it usually. We have used
a Sony W900 in the same place for a couple of years with no such
problems. All the equipment is run from a large UPS and there is no
obvious generator of magnetic fields close by.
So what about Sony support? Here in the UK it has been very sadly
lacking in commitment and urgency. I am however very grateful for the
assistance given to me by Andrew Rodney and to someone Andrew kindly
suggested very closely associated with the design of the Artisan. It
appears that perhaps there might be a problem with the Matrox G400
graphics card, but this is only one of a number of possibilities.
Sorry not to be able to be more upbeat about this screen at this time.
Cheers
Richard
