I don't really know what you mean by "end point targeting".
By endpoint targeting I meant, using the levels eyedroppers to set the black
and white points of a file to match the maximum shadow and minimum highlight
limits of an output device. This is described in detail In Fraser/Blatner
Real World Photoshop 7. The technique even allows for precise mapping of
minimum highlight with the soft "blowing out" to paper white. I was intrigued
why the co-author of Colour Management Fraser/Murphy would recommend "always
using black point compensation" and then go on to describe a technique for
accurately mapping of black and white to the maximum shadow and minimum
highlight points of the output device This seemed to me to be an admission
that the CMS has not perfectly accomplished this.
The discussion here is on the high end of profile generation and all the
subtle and complex sub programmes and algorithms they entail. I am assuming
from this discussion that there is much optimism about the CMS's ability to
handle the dynamic range translation in one way or another. End point
targeting attacks the problem from a different perspective, that of practical
image mechanics. By printing sample black patches against L* 0 , using
relative with No BPC to discover the exact material black and white limits of
the device and then simply manually targeting the file to fit that range.
This also allows for a custom, tailored to the image adjustment of the
reproduction curve, if a linear flattening created too much loss of shadow
detail. Hence my original question .
And, wouldn't this,( accurate gamut mapping and/or black point compensation
and/or perceptual compression) in theory at least, preclude the necessity
for any end point targeting?
