PDF works just fine for scatter proofs, soft proofs. Heck, for proofs in
general. TIFF/IT-P1 may be being used less frequently, but it is a ISO
standard format if I recall correctly. It is still used extensively in
rotogravure printing and many publications still prefer to accept ads as
TIFF/IT-P1 because they are essentially "digital film". Meaning, pretty hard
to screw up without some serious effort. TIFF/IT and TIFF won't be dying
anytime soon. TIFF/IT may loose its popularity to PDFX/1a:2001 or 2003, but
won't go away.
