It's not an abysmal standard. sRGB is based on actual display behavior.
It's not something that was conjured up out of no where. It's fair to
be critical of certain applications of sRGB, in particular ones
requiring higher quality and flexibility. The sRGB spec was designed
for other applications: those that could still benefit if there were a
standard RGB color space, but don't need the higher quality and
flexibility (and complexity) implied by the ICC spec.
By the way: How could anyone hired to program Mac OS X color issues be
so unaware of color-management as to assign the monitor profile as the
source?
It's for performance reasons that the concept exists. But I think we're
long past the point where display compensation should be occurring
within application windows.
