I would be very surprised to hear Apple come out with a rigorous, rational,
unbiased, scientific explanation for their current choice of 1.8 gamma on
the Mac. I don't believe we'll ever get this on this list openly. Like you
said, 1.8 was born out of the necessity of matching the original
LaserWriter. But those days are long gone. I personally never calibrate to
1.8 since I read Bruce Lindbloom excellent treatment on the reasons behind
2.2.
