The only advantage I see to keep a 1.8 gamma is for "generic" users (sorry, it
was too tempting to use that word here...), or non-pro if you prefer, who open
old untagged Apple RGB images. They will obviously not be displayed properly if
automatically associated to sRGB or any 2.2 gamma space. That it a good enough
reason for a company like Apple to keep things as they were.
Apart from that, I dont see any good reason to keep it that way. Also, a 2.2
gamma with a 1 to 1 video Look-Up-Table makes the system more compatible with
most other display devices.
