I'm not suggesting that old, untagged images be assumed to be sRGB. If you
have a calibrated display, working with a modern version of an image
application like Photoshop, the image is likely going to appear different
than it originally did way back when no matter what aim point you calibrate
your display to. Outside smart applications, the image might look better
with a 1.8 verses 2.2 calibrated display but it's an untagged doc so
anything is possible. IOW, it's not going to be display properly in either
situation. This is an image that was almost certainly made in Photoshop 4 or
earlier using the users display as the guide (and think how few back there
were using calibrated displays).
Frankly it seems really silly not to have hosed the 1.8 gamma behavior the
second OSX was designed. I have to believe there are tons more untagged sRGB
documents (and ton's made years after Apple RGB went the way of the Dodo
bird) that keeping 1.8 for the rare Apple RGB images just doesn't seem like
a very viable excuse for sticking with 1.8 gamma.

Apart from that, I dont see any good reason to keep it that way. Also, a 2.2

Right, with FAR less adjustments happening at the CLUT since 2.2 is much
closer to the real TRC of a display. 1.8 only provides more banding which
serves no one. Plus look at the Web (internet) and all the images created in
a 2.2 gamma. With rare exceptions, most browsers and not color managed. If I
had a dollar for every Mac user who wanted to know why his images (assumed
to be a 1.8 gamma) looked off on their clients PC web browser....
