This has been a very interesting thread regarding the Generic RGB vs.
sRGB and gamma 1.8 vs. 2.2. From a relative bystander's point of view,
John's defense of Apple's position seems (no offense intended) very
weak by comparison to the arguments and information presented by many
of the regular contributors to this list.
So at the risk of raising an ugly specter, I just gotta wonder out
loud whether Apple's *real* motivation for sticking by these seemingly
outmoded standards is founded more in politics than anything else. Just
speculation here, but is it possible that someone somewhere in Apple's
development hierarchy is resisting these apparent defacto standards
because of where they originated and for whom they most directly
benefit?
I know it sounds silly, petty, and counterproductive, but I personally
have worked with otherwise great managers who've (on occasion) refused
to implement brilliant ideas and strategies based solely on their
source. Even if Apple were able to provide us with a truly enlightened
explanation for why they should hold tight to Generic RGB and gamma
1.8, it still seems kinda foolish to swim against a current that grows
stronger every day.
I can't speak for everyone, but personally, I won't love my Mac any
less if it has one more thing about it that's more like a PC. In fact,
I'll love it more for those times when I don't have to explain to my
clients why their images may look a bit different when they get back to
the office.
