I was basing my comments on tests with earlier versions of OSX (meaning
before 10.3.4). I9ve just checked again (at your request) and yes you9re
correct Preview AND Safari are using the Monitor Profile for Untagged
RGB
images. It was as John says up until they shipped 10.3.4, but it looks
like
they forgot to tell him when they decided not to tell us ;-)
Since I9d replaced the Generic RGB Profile with the sRGB profile this
wasn9t
obvious to me before.
Ian,
When I try to trash the Generic RGB Profile from the ColorSync folder in
the OS X (10.1.4) system folder (in order to rename the sRGB profile as
Generic RGB Profile), a window pops up saying "The operation could not
be completed because this item is owned by root."
What to do?
PS to John Zimmerer:
As a photographer I look foreward to be able to have untagged web images
displayed as sRGB in a web browser. Of the millions of images on the
websites of photo agencies like Getty Images, Corbis, Alamy, Ozimages
etc most, if not all, as far as I know are untagged, but were prepared
in sRGB (which is the default color space of Adobe Photoshop and other
programs used for creating web images). I don't see any indication that
any of this will change while further millions of images will be added
over the next few years.
BTW: "Blue" skies in these untagged sRGB images are displayed purple
when I check "Use Color Sync" in Internet Explorer. They become blue
when I leave "Use Color Sync" unchecked, albeit somewhat washed out
compared to what they look in a program that can display them as sRGB.
