Its been discussed (and effectively answered) here on assorted occasions. Its
certainly possible to match a press to an Approval, even with direct to
plate. The question is whether those responsible for the prepress are using
appropriate compensation for the lack of film-based dot gain in their process... if
they are not, then they may well not be able to tweak the press keys
sufficiently to compensate. Knowledgable prepress providers will have this covered long
ago... but there are many who do not fall in that category.
Besides, they agree to match the proof, if they don't then you don't pay them
until they do, which inspires them to figure out a proper fix for the
problem!
