Theoretically - laying down a gradient is smoother the fewer times the
printer has to switch between inks.
The newest Epson R800 is dispensing with the diluted inks because of
the capability of squirting a smaller volume.
I recommend, however, that you carefully consider buying a Roland. They
have abandoned the fine art market in favor of the display market,
which signals a lesser concern with quality. Roland DGA has also
abandoned us as consumers.
My wife and I own a Roland FJ400 and Roland's dealer and authorized
service people, Professional Graphics here in NY, performed a routine
service to the machine that was done so ineptly that it left the
machine inoperable. Roland DGA told us they would take responsibility
and a new head was installed along with new electronics and various
other items by another service outfit. Unfortunately the printer runs
only for a short time and then black and cyan inks stop flowing.
Roland stopped all communications and is not honoring the warranty.
Roland's legal department instead sent us a letter, stating that if we
called tech Support or anyone at the company again they would sue us. !
take us to court - for presumably "bothering" them about getting their
printer to work.
Incredibly outrageous behavior by Roland DGA that runs counter to any
business practice I've ever heard of.
So right now we have a $17000 Roland printer, that we invested another
several thousand dollars in. We are unable to make a print at all and
the company is refusing to do anything about it and they have
instructed all their authorized service people not to do anything for
us. I would seriously consider not dealing with a company that would
treat any of their customers so badly.
We explored the Epson 9600 and right out of the box, at the place where
they are selling one, on our first try, it made better prints than the
Roland ever did. Larger Gamut for sure, better definition between
tones, snappier blacks and the horizontal faint lines that were always
there with the Roland - gone. We ran both printers through imagePrint
rip.
We are now planning to check out the Mimaki, which is considered by
many the very finest wide-format printer.
I'll let you know what we find out ....

We are about to upgrade our one of our printers to a new Roland Hi Fi
Pro. Their latest printers have changed back from eight color to six
color, with the rationale that the need for the light cyan and magenta
is not needed anymore due to the ability to use smaller droplets
instead. We would like to run with the CMYKOG option but as image
quality is our main concern we wonder if we lose anything in the
gradations etc by not having the diluted inks?
