On the one hand you say you have no control over the presses, on the
other hand you say you expect them to match the proof. If you supply
the proof, then you have control over the press. If the proof doesn't
represent a color response the press can actually match though, then
your control via this method will be poor, because the press operators
can't get a good match. If the proof can't be matches by the press,
then the customers will be disappointed in the press results, compared
to the proofs.
It always puzzles me that people are spending huge amounts of money
running presses below par, but can't be bothered with the expense of
characterizing them, a process that would improve the customer expectation
(through accurate proofs), consistency and quality of the output (by providing
a proof to the press operator that they can match exactly, and in separating
the originals correctly for the press), and as a result, save a fortune in rework.
