I think there's a bit of confusion out there on these terms (Jim, you
probably already know my take on this).
I think profiling could be more correctly called press CHARACTERIZATION.
Press fingerprinting, although I can't say I've ever seen a precise
definition of the term, refers more to the process you might go through
PRIOR to profiling. Fingerprinting, to me, would encompass getting in
order many of the mechanical aspects of the press (pressures, packing,
chemistry, evaluation of print contrast, TVI, etc.). This would require

Thinking in inkjet proofing terms, press fingerprinting could be looked
at as the calibration/linearization stage of an inkjet where you are
physically altering the behavior of the press. Once the behavior is.

Sorry, I can't agree with this interpretation. What you are referring
to is calibration (altering the device to meet certain behavior goals).
As far as I'm aware, fingerprinting is the same as characterization, which
is the same as profiling. They all refer to measuring the behavior of
the device. Its behavior is its fingerprint. A mislabeled device could
be identified by profiling it, and then matching its fingerprint to
labeled profiles.
