Erik Nikkanen on another list is right that press manufacturers might
do better with regard to engineering of ink control systems. On the
other hand he is wrong that press engineering is the only problem or
that spectral matching is the only solution. The problem is the
TechNote 5044 approach of host-based color management which I used to
defend because people were buying into instrument and software
solutions they could not lock into the previous interpreter
architecture. The situation has changed radically, both for text
management and for color management. I take it you don't read German as
in that case you would know that the ECI cookbooks for InDesign specify
reseparation to RGB, if memory serves. In my humble opinion there are
problems with the precision in doing so as inverse perceptual gamut
mapping causes a sizeable dE in the best of cases, but I don't see the
problem in reseparation.
The U.S. is free to do as it pleases as a matter of course, but the
public service educational programme is running on the trunk road
systems of the world and sooner or later will be coming to a printer
near you -:).
Thanks,
Henrik
