It seems to me that a CMM with a bit of AI could deal with this.

In UCR setup, one specifies the amount of area around neutral that will be
black generated - otherwise the color remains in the image. So, for
instance, in my black generations, most chocolates would remain brown and
UCR would not occur. This is why many people are moving away from GCR.

So, in response to the question about variable KGen per image, I would
suggest that it would be relatively straight forward to have the CMM perform
a histogram of how much color is in the image vs. how much neutral. It could
then boost the KGen for white dishes on lace table cloth, and reduce it for
chocolates.
