Color managed printing from anything but Photoshop

Why is this so difficult??

I've been following this list for years and consider myself to be a reasonably color management savvy person. I've got loads of custom profiles for various Epson printers that work like a charm when I print out of Photoshop where I can set choose the appropriate profile in Photoshop's print dialog and then set the printer driver dialolg as it was when the profile was made (usually no color adjustment). But try to duplicate this in ANY other application running under Panther and all bets are off. While I really like Photoshop, it sure would be nice to be able to use another program some time.

I followed the thread a few weeks ago about printing from iPhoto and have tried to build filters using the ColorSync utiltiy and apply them in the print dialog. I'm getting nothing anywhere remotely close to expected results.

Specifically I'm trying to print from iView Media Pro but I don't think the problems I'm having are application specific. All I really want to do is send a large batch of prints to the printer at once.... something iView Media or iPhoto or any number of apps can do far more efficiently than Photoshop. I'm printing to an Epson 9600 using the standard driver running under 10.3.2. So far the only way I can get predictable results is to batch convert every file in Photoshop to the custom printer profile and save a copy of the file. I can then load that batch of files with IView Media Pro and output them to the printer with predictable results. However if I save the files in any sort of standard working space I can't figure out how to convert to my custom printer profile on the way to the printer. It seems like a Quartz filter ought to do the trick but it isn't working. Any hints? Changing the profile under the devices tab to a custom profile doesn't seem to work either. If anyone has figured out a way to do this reliably I'd love to hear it.

Severe frustration setting in....
