Socio-economically speaking, if an industrial body (corporate or
non-corporate) is closely identified with a standard or specification,
other industrial bodies (corporate or non-corporate) will establish
competing standards or specifications. The choice of illuminant for
viewing conditions, the choice of color model for the default three
channel working space, the choice of default characterization chart,
the choice of default printing condition, it comes down to industrial
politics. For the everyday user industrial politics increases the
complexity and decreases the benefit of device independent workflows.
The printing industry has never been able to agree on anything. After
three hundred years of squabbling the industry still does not even have
a common measurement system. There is the U.S. printer point, the U.S.
typewriter point and the Franco-German printer point. Someone here once
used a wonderful turn of phrase, saying that trying to point this
industry in a common direction was like trying to herd cats -:).
Thanks,
Henrik
