I mentioned this RIP on the list some time ago. Its the first instance I have
seen of keyed media... that is to say you need to use a special key for every
sheet of media printed on with this RIP. The spectral (though canned)
fingerprint process sounds decidedly familiar from another RIP that resurfaces
repackaged in one manner or another every so often, but as a single purpose proofing
RIP, using canned printer definitions (no matter how "spectral"), and keying
every sheet of media that runs through the printer, I was sufficiently
uninterested to not pursuing determining the actual core involved.
Sounds mostly like Hype. Spectral characterization can be useful, but current
inkjet printers don't appear to be intended for spectral reproduction, even
if spectral profiling software is available. Most articles I've come across
regarding spectral reproduction talk about carefully choosing inks so was to
act as a good set of spectral basis functions for reproducing the expected
input spectra targets. Most inkjet inksets seem to be chosen on the basis
of matching industry expectations (ie. CMYK is expected), as well as
compensating for device limitations (ie. light C, M & K to compensate for
visible dots etc.)
