I believe PDF is Postscript Level 3. When .ps files are sent to a
Postscript Level 3 RIP, the ps is converted to PDF in the "normalizer". So
you can save some conversions by dropping a PDF directly into the hot folder
on a PS3 RIP.

It's interpreted postscript which can make a difference.

We at AZTEK have found long ago that the only way to get monitors to have
the exact same viewing quality is to adjust the factory presets even high
voltage power supplies. That is put your instruments (spectrophotometer
etc.) for reading the color temperature, XYZ and RGB intensity in auto read
mode.
Open up either the monitors presets and factory adjustment controls or even
take the cover off of a monitor for access to the potentiometers. Make the
adjustments of your various monitors to the same standards. Then after
succeeding at the adjustments go and profile them. You will now find that
they look alike.
I a in single shipment of Barco, Mitsubishi / Nec, LaCie, Sony, etc.
monitors with even consecutive serial numbers on careful instrumented
testing; you will determine they are all different. The factories do not
have the needed quality controls to achieve what seems to be a reasonable
goal. That is have three identical viewing monitors. This is why those of
us who care enough to want to attempt color management of monitors need to
jump in and do it.

I have a challenge in getting 3 brand new Eizo Coloredge 21"s to match
eachother exactly regrarding the brightness. The software is Colornavigator
2.0.1, meter is iOne Diplay, they are connected digitally to G4:s. All
parameters and target values are the same, lighting is dim end even, no
other calibration/profiling software present.
Calibrated and profiled they all look decent, the luminances are the same by
the numbers, but they do not visually match. Anybody?
Thanks,

Thanks to all for the suggestions. We did finally resolve this situation
today by using Photoshop CS in OS-X to rasterize the AI file, rather than
PS7 under OS9. For some reason this resolved the issues. We suspect problems
in the AI file were the root of the problem, as the RIP gave us an error
message when we tried to feed the Illustrator EPS file directly to the RIP.
As sfor the reason to rasterize in PS, my client uses Colorblind Edit to
make color adjustments on the file based on which of his two Epson 10K
printers he is sending the file to. Thanks again for all the help!

It's interpreted postscript which can make a difference.
Both Postscript and PDF are interpreted languages. PDF is a different page
description language, with many aspects in common with Postscript.
Most Postscript interpreters have been modified in some fashion (with a new
front end that uses the same backend machinery, with a translator, or by
encoding PDF operators in Postscript) to be able to interpret PDF.
Postscript can be harder to "get right" (ie. to make behave in a consistent
fashion across different interpreters) than PDF, since it is a general
language, and the interaction between different elements can be harder to
determine. On the other hand, Postscript has been around longer, and PDF now
incorporates more advanced features (such as embedded profiles, transparency
etc.), so some PDF implementations are more bug ridden than their Postscript
counterparts.
