I don't often disagree with Leonard Rosenthol, but I disagree with his
assertions on multiple counts. He spends quite a bit of time talking
about the merits of PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3. Then says:
"Given PDF/X compliance as the standard for "press-worthy, " I will
state that it is possible to create "press-worthy" PDFs from Panther
DIRECTLY FROM the "Save as PDF" feature and WITHOUT the need for
third-party tools."
Yet OS X does not create compliant PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3.
"Unfortunately, however, they hid it away where no one is bound to find
it."
Considering it doesn't work, I think it's very fortunate they hid it
away where no one is bound to find it.
"It provides similar functionality -- from image down-sampling and
recompression, to color management/correction and EVEN the direct
creation of PDF/X-3 files."
Apparently Leonard didn't actually try making such a PDF/X-3 file and
preflighting it. I've yet to find anyone who has successfully created
PDF/X-3 from OS X 10.3.3 without a 3rd party tool. It always fails
preflight in the most basic of PDF/X preflighting tools.
Anyway, here is Julie Shaffer's latest article on the subject which
gets into more detail:
