The DTP-22 IS different than the Digital Swatchbook. One of them, and I
cannot remember which, requires a password be supplied each time
spectral data is read from the device. I believe this was done to make
the spectrophotometer uniquely keyed to a particular vendor's software.
The passwords are pseudorandomly generated by the interface software
supplied by X-Rite, they are not something the user usually sees. X-Key
can supply the required password, thus getting access to the data, but
you will have to copy the information into a program. Alternatively, you
can try using X-Key from inside TextEdit. I used to have success reading
directly into TextEdit with X-Key running in the background. This method
does not work with Microsoft Word because Word takes too mucy time
processing the input and loses some of the data.

I have had success using the Keyspan USA-28X serial/USB adapter and the
Spectrolino. To make it work with some software it required setting Port
1 on the Keyspan to emulate the printer port, since internal modems
often make it impossible to use the modem port. You may also have to
plug everything together and turn on the SpectroScan prior to starting
the Mac.
In about a month there will be a much better solution for directly
reading Spectrolino/SpectroScan/SpectroScan T with newer iBooks and
PowerBooks. Email me off-list at email@hidden for more
information on the new SpectraShop 2 spectral program.
Good luck!
