First a big thank you to all who have responded! Your
generosity in sharing your hard won experience is very
much appreciated. I can work my way around CMYK
profiles, but this RGB stuff is new territory. I will
contact a few of you kind people off-list to learn
more.
I have spoken with Gretag's tech support about this,
and was told that nobody had ever seen this problem
before. That seemed strange as other designers I have
worked with have seen the same thing. It is nice to
know that I'm not the only one after all!
Some of the responses left me well out of my depth.
The issue of LAB hue torquing is something I am
familiar with in the CMYK world. This affects reds and
blues, but I thought yellows were less susceptible. I
tried the advice of editing the profile as though it
were a CMYK one with cyan dots in the yellows. This
worked though I created problems elsewhere. At least
the match between screen and print was good enough
that I could tell what was going wrong without wasting
too much paper. More experimenting is needed.
That leads me to another question. Some profiling
packages use the Saturation rendering intent to use
pure primaries when called for in the input file.
Obviously this will help for a true RGB printer and
yellows, but it should for a CMY dye-sub. As far as I
can tell, ProfileMaker's Saturation and Perceptual
rendering intents are nearly (or exactly in some
cases) identical. I have some work where having a
rendering option that really did give max saturation
when called for would be just the ticket.
