That is true for wide-format Epsons, but the desktop Epsons have a 'native'
resolution of 720ppi, according to Epson.

I seem to remember reading Bruce Fraser saying that there was some advantage
in sending the image in 16bit because PS would convert it to the printer
profile in 16bit before reducing it to 8bit to send to the printer.
