I've seen a benefit to sending 480 ppi to the Epsons if

you're printing fairly small sizes (up to 8x10)

you're careful about sharpening

and

you have real data for the pixels (no upsampling to get to 480 ppi).

The benefit of 16-bit is indeed in the profile conversion, as Bob noted. If you're printing from Photoshop, and getting Photoshop to do the color conversion, you'll get somewhat smoother results starting from a 16-bit file than an 8-bit one-Photoshop does the color conversion on the 16-bit data, then downsamples to 8-bit and sends that to the printer driver. If you're doing color management in the driver via ColorSync or ICM, there's no benefit because by that point the data has already been downsampled to 8 bits.

David,

The native PIXEL resolution of the Epson printer drivers is 360 ppi.
If you send a lower-res (or higher-res) file to the driver it will
be resampled in the driver to this resolution. I believe this figure
of 360 applies to all of Epson's printers.

That is true for wide-format Epsons, but the desktop Epsons have a 'native'
resolution of 720ppi, according to Epson.

As for printing 16-bit images, I think you'll find that it all gets
sampled down to 8-bit numbers in the printer driver.

I seem to remember reading Bruce Fraser saying that there was some advantage
in sending the image in 16bit because PS would convert it to the printer
profile in 16bit before reducing it to 8bit to send to the printer.
