Why do I need/want them?
there are changes that can have effects ranging from subtle to significant. A big portion of the new spec is a clarification (both verbal and algorithmic/colorimetric) of the previous spec. Things that weren't nailed down and were implemented by software vendors somewhat haphazardly are now defined much more clearly.

Does Adobe Photoshop work with them?
yes

If so, which version(s) and do they work on Mac and Win?
Photoshop 7 on if I remember correctly. Basically any Adobe app that uses ACE 2. Both on Mac and Windows.

Do both the MacOS and Windows OS support them?
ColorSync 4 which is in Max OS X supports them. ICM in Windows does not and it looks like it never will. Does this suck? yes.

Will printer drivers support them?
The drivers tend to rely on the OS for the CMM. So see answer above. Most RIPs use a CMM licensed from another company like Kodak, I'm not sure about their CMM but it seems like it's still under active development so if it doesn't support them yet it probably will.

Which profiling packages create them?
Fuji ColourKit was the first, GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker 5 will when it ships (later this month, reportedly), Monaco I don't think does yet and I haven't heard an announcement about their time-line. Other products I do not know. I canvassed many companies for time-line information prior to a presentation I gave at the GATF color conference in December 2002. At that time most companies said either "sometime in 2003" or didn't know. Fuji had already delivered, GretagMacbeth was a little late but it's pending and .........
