Agreed on all points. Paul, soft proofing is indeed a viable technology
and I have seen it work very well in most cases. When it isn't working,
there is usually something wrong either in the application or on the
System level. Case in point, I have seen many monitor profile settings
revert back to generic profiles after a crash or even something as benign
as a re-start. Verify that the profile you made is being used...and also
verify that Adobe Gamma isn't conflicting with your calibration software.
Also check that Photoshop is set up correctly and is "seeing" your monitor
profile.
This can work...
