Ah yes, to supply images with embedded profiles or not...
RGB images:
There is no ambiguity here: if you're supplying RGB images, embed a
profile. I can't see that anybody could make a case for NOT embedding a
profile in an RGB image assuming it's the CORRECT profile in the first
place. If it's not, then you get whatever's coming to you! :-)
Just don't embed the original scanner/digicam profile if you know
what's good for you; convert to one of Photoshop's standard RGB working
spaces. Don't lose sleep over which one to use. It's not important as
you think if, in the end, it's ONLY going to a CMYK offset press.
CMYK images:
This gets a bit tricky. The purist in me would like to think that all
printers have a color-managed clue and will either honor your embedded
profile OR make an informed decision/evaluation before converting to
their custom press profile.
The pessimist in me assumes that most don't have a clue (and their
Photoshop color prefs are all wrong) and that to supply them a CMYK
image with an embedded profile would be just asking for a disaster.
The moderate in me sez to first try and talk with somebody in prepress
(forget sales or a CSR) and assess their knowledge. Based on that,
embed or not. If I don't know where it's going or who to call, I'd play
it safe and NOT embed but instead supply my profile separate from the
image and include a little "ReadMe" with the job that explains what
that .icc thingy is on the CD and pray that it gets in the hands of
somebody that knows what's going on.
Political commentary:
Unlike some, I frankly don't believe that the printing world has stood
up and a vote taken that embedding profiles in images is nonsense and
should be avoided like 3-day old sushi. I think the current
"reluctance" on the part of printers to accept images with embedded
profiles is more out of fear and ignorance than from a position of
knowledge and experience that the technology is somehow inherently
flawed (hogwash). I know this because of I've brought prepress/print
folks from the darkness of "by-the-numbers" (which numbers?) CMYK and
into the light of ICC color-managed proofing and RGB-CMYK conversions.
The ones that listened with open minds cannot, now, see any other way
of working in today's prepress environment of mixed RGB/CMYK from both
internal and external sources. Threaten to remove all remnants of ICC
color management in their day-to-day dealings with unknown images and
you're liable to find yourself....well....un-alive!
Thank you for getting this far and listening to the ramblings of an
insane mind.
:-)
Cheers,
Terry
