This is the best word I have heard on this subject - I have always been in
favor of proofing to standards, but this method effectively gets the best of
both worlds:
A really smart press house could have it both ways. Optimize their press in
any way they please, to a repeatable running condition that gives the best
possible results. Profile it.
Using appropriate tools (I've got some :-), create a TR001/SWOP to their
press profile device link transform that preserves black, and maps the gamut
appropriately. Give their press profile to whoever wants to do their own
separation and proofing. They are now set to accept work that is separated
either to their particular press, or is delivered in TR001/SWOP, and produce
excellent results.
