Line work encompasses all data that is not a raster halftone. That would
include halftones in black and white and colored/multi colored images. The
linework layer is reserved for all vector based objects. That being type,
polygons, vignettes. Depending on the RIP parameters you can have your
vignettes sent to the CT layer, or have part of them on the CT layer. The
linework layer is also used to hold all single bit images. Think of it this
way, all photos be they black and white, mono, duo, tri or quad tones (that
means CMYK too) are on the CT layer. Everything else is on the linework
layer. Then you get into CT Handshake, NewCT (NCT), ScitexCT (SCT), CT
(Continuous Tone), LW (line work), NLW (New LineWork) on down the line. I'm
not sure if Scitex was the originator of the formats, but typically it is
associated with them. Crossfield also used CT/LW. But Scitex, then
CreoScitex and now Creo is where you most often find CT/LW.
