I think there's a bit of confusion out there on these terms (Jim, you
probably already know my take on this).
I think profiling could be more correctly called press
CHARACTERIZATION. Press fingerprinting, although I can't say I've ever
seen a precise definition of the term, refers more to the process you
might go through PRIOR to profiling. Fingerprinting, to me, would
encompass getting in order many of the mechanical aspects of the press
(pressures, packing, chemistry, evaluation of print contrast, TVI,
etc.). This would require intimate knowledge of press behavior and
expertise that is really NOT required when profiling a press. To say to
a pressman "here, run this profiling testchart using your standard
densities" and then call this "fingerprinting" is a bit of a stretch in
my opinion. You could simply end up with a profile that very accurately
describes a BAD print/press condition!
Thinking in inkjet proofing terms, press fingerprinting could be looked
at as the calibration/linearization stage of an inkjet where you are
physically altering the behavior of the press. Once the behavior is
where you want it, then it's time to profile that print/press
condition. It's then process control's job of KEEPING it in that
running condition from then on. Of course, the fingerprinting could
done as part of makeready prior to profiling but I generally find that
I need targets unique to fingerprinting/calibration with the profiling
chart included on a separate form as part of separate press run. In
fact, I wouldn't even call what I do fingerprinting but more like
"calibration" where I may tweak the plate curves, especially if it's
CtP, to arrive at a more "standard" TVI/dot gain and then profile it
from there.
Just my $.02...

Or isn't there a difference?
This is not meant to be a trick question either.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think they are the same thing. If I am
not
mistaken, PerfectProof introduced what they call their Desktop
'fingerprint'
in the ProofMaster Rip. Which is basically a devicelink from your
Reference
profile (press) to your proofer profile (paper).
That is not to say 'fingerprint' means a devicelink; that is just what
ProofMaster does with it. But in the context of the ProofMaster rip
was the
first time I was introduced to the term.
