With the former, color conversions happen on the host computer. The RIP does
not get involved any further in color conversions. The output either goes
through some linearization, as in some inkjet printer RIPs (Onyx Postershop)
before hitting the printer, or goes straight to films or plates (Prinergy,
MetaDimensions, Apogee, ...).
With the latter, color is sent unmanaged from the host computer and
conversions take place within the RIP. Many RIPs have different ways of
handling the conversions internally and some are not entirely ICC or will
force you into a PostScript CRD type of conversions (Harlequin ColorPro),
and so on... So there is not a "standardized" way of handling color data
inside RIPs as opposed to doing CMS directly from within an Adobe
application.
