It depends on who you are, what you need to print, your color management skills and your workflow.
For example, if you are a photographer with one computer and one inkjet printer then it might be easier to convert your images in applications and just print using same as source.
But if you were in the printing business and you were going to use press profiles and and a third party rip for inkjet pre-press proofs then you might color manage your images and pages for your press in the apps and then use a third party rip to create pre-press proofs.
But those are only two options.
