The problem I often find is that the printer has the client locked in a
relationship, if you know what I mean. The work we do is small potatoes
compared to the printing bill, so naturally the print salesman has the
budget to wine and dine the client in all sorts of ways that we can't (the
B.S. flows freely over two matinis). Meanwhile, the pressman is tackling the
job by sheer force of will rather than using the technology available
because the boss also doesn't understand the vale of color management - only
sales, and he never paid to train the pressman.
Also, if he can show the client that his pressman had to work hard to
complete the job correctly and that all outside work is somehow suspect,
then he can up the bill. The client will never believe that someone outside
of the pressroom has more knowledge than those who run the press and he
doesn't want to admit his own ignorance in choosing this shop too, so he's
ready to buy the B.S.
So all the bread is buttered on the wrong side for any of this to change
until someone comes up with pushbutton prefect solutions.
